NSW: Shake-up of laws after independent report delivered = 2
In a statement issued this evening, the Central Sydney Area Health Service (CSAHS)
said after the handing down of the report today it had taken steps to alter the framework
within which its forensic medicine services were delivered.
"As of today the former Institute of Forensic Medicine (Glebe) will be known as the
Department of Forensic Medicine, a unit of the Central Sydney Laboratory Services," the
statement said.
"Professor John Hilton will return to the unit as the clinical head of the new Department
of Forensic Medicine."
CSAHS has appointed an acting executive officer, Mark Patterson, to manage the Glebe
facility, based on his managerial skills. He would be formally appointed within weeks.
"Mr Patterson has no background in either medicine or science," the statement said.
It said the new statewide authority - the Forensic Medicine and Pathology Authority
- charged with ensuring high standards of clinical practices, ethics and compliance with
the law, would oversee and coordinate the Department of Forensic Medicine, along with
those at Westmead and Newcastle.
