Vic: Senior citizens are mostly safe drivers: research
New research shows the stereotype that every grandpa in a hat is a doddering menaceon the road is unfair.
A three-year project in Melbourne has found that a small proportion of accident-proneelderly drivers - with illnesses such as early dementia, heart disorders and stroke -have given others in their age group a reputation they don't deserve.
Project leader MARITA FLYNN, a neuro-psychologist and driving instructor, says pastresearch held that age alone was responsible for the high accident rate of drivers agedover 65.
However, her research shows most older drivers are safe, because they watch their speedand avoid driving at night or in peak traffic.
Rather, she says, it's a subgroup of older drivers with brain impairment related tovarious medical illnesses common to their age that's responsible for most accidents.
